Criteria

  • Live in the Yukon with a valid passport;
  • Be 18 years or older, ready to travel without family, friends, or community members;
  • Be respectful and follow program rules and cultural customs;
  • Be interested in learning about different cultures, sharing ideas, and learning about Alaska’s connection to salmon;
  • Show leadership and be willing to represent the Yukon as an ambassador;
  • Agree to stay for the whole exchange and share your experiences when you return home.

FAQs

Who can participate in the exchange?

Community members, fishers, students, and conservation advocates who live in the Yukon and are care about salmon and the rivers (18 years or older).

What is the purpose of the trip?

To learn about salmon conservation, local traditions, and community efforts. It also helps people from different places work together.

When does the trip happen?

Usually, in July or August, for about 8-10 days.

What will I learn during the trip?

About salmon life, challenges in managing salmon, cultural importance, obstacles salmon must overcome, and ways to protect salmon.

Are there any costs?

The Yukon River Panel’s fund will pay for travel, places to stay, and activities. You may need to buy personal snacks or gifts.

Do I need experience or knowledge?

No, everyone is welcome- no matter your background or knowledge.

What are the benefits?

You will learn about salmon, the Yukon River Watershed, experience different cultures, and make new friends across borders.

How do I apply?

Is the trip for all ages?

It is for adults and youth ages 18+ who want to learn about salmon.

Will I get to see salmon in the wild?

There is a good chance that you will! You will have chances to travel by boat on the river between communities.
